Flaming Fondue at The Melting Pot Jakarta

Hello JKTGOers, and Happy New Year!

2015 was a great year, but we can definitely make 2016 a better year. Now that we’re all back to work, we need a little bit of fancy in our system to keep us peppy and productive. The Melting Pot Jakarta is a popular Fondue Restaurant brought to Indonesia from the United States. They do more than just desserts, and we think you’ll be in for a treat.

The Melting Pot Jakarta is based on a restaurant chain in the USA of the same name. They’re so popular, in fact, that they have more than a hundred stores all over the country. The Melting Pot Jakarta is the first one in the whole of South East Asia, and while this one may be based in Plaza Senayan, they are planning on expanding within this next year. Don’t worry.

Most of you will probably go “Fondue Restaurant? What’s that?” “Oh! They must do Chocolate Fondue!”

And we will reply with: CHEESE FONDUE!

That’s right. Chocolate’s not all they serve here.

This is the Spinach Artichoke Cheese Fondue. A combination of Gouda and Fontina cheeses, spinach, artichoke hearts and garlic. Writing that all down makes us sound much more brave and adventurous than we really are. It’s just really cheesy, guys. You can’t taste the spinach or the artichoke hearts. BUT. We hear the Classic Alpine Swiss is even nicer and sounds even fancier – if that’s even possible.

The word fondue originates from the French word meaning dissolve. The original fondue is actually fondue au fromage = melted cheese.

The Melting Pot Jakarta is well known for their four-course meals that can be shared by everyone around the table. We liken it to fancy, French sukiyaki (even though it’s American and we’re not always boiling things).

The Spinach and Artichoke Cheese Fondue can be bought à la carte for IDR 118.000 per portion, but we recommend getting The Classic Four-Course Experience for IDR 488.000 and sampling everything. The portion sizes are quite generous too and can easily feed two people. It may not seem like much at first, but can quickly fill up your stomach.

Now before you go on, order a drink or two (or three). The Melting Pot Jakarta has quite a large selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. We had a taste of the Wyndham Estate Cabernet “Bin 888”  from South Eastern Australia (IDR 175.000), but for those preferring lighter fare, the Moscato d’Asti from Piedmont, Italy (IDR 105.000) is a great one to try.

For coffee drinkers, The Melting Pot Jakarta also have several Coffees & After-Dinner Drink Specialties that seem about as interesting as everything else on the menu.

The JKTGO Team is pretty well known for being very unhealthy. So while that looks like broth… it’s actually very clear vegetable oil. That’s right, we’re preparing our Classic Entrées in Bourguignonne – a European-style fondue in hot oil, served with tempura and sesame batter. East meets west? Yes, please!

You see all that on the table? That’s the standard portion size for ONE PERSON the salad couldn’t even fit on the table.

There are, of course, healthier alternatives.

The Seasoned Court Bouillon is the standard cooking-style here at The Melting Pot Jakarta. It’s a freshly made, lightly seasoned vegetable broth that takes care not to outshine the protein.
There’s also the Mojo (pron. mo-ho), a Caribbean-style bouillon with a distinctive fresh-garlic flavour and plenty of zesty citrus.

We know what you’re thinking… WHERE’S THE BLOODY CHOCOLATE??? Calm down.

We present to you… The Caramel Nut Chocolate Fondue (feat. cool-looking flambé). An irresistable combination of rich milk chocolate, sweet caramel and crunchy candied walnuts with a bit of showmanship thrown in. (Get your snapchats ready).

There’s also the Cookies ‘n’ Cream Marshmallow Dream which sounds like a delightfully diabetic dessert that we would have loved to try. You can also create your own combination of flavours, which is your chance to go Mad Scientist on your friends. Both are IDR 118.000.
