Two weeks ago, JKTGO Team had a chance to visit Singapore for
holiday Christmas on a Great Street event at Orchard Road. As you may have seen on our instagram story, we had fun at the celebration. Felt so happy to witness the Orchard Road turning into a magical winter wonderland.
We spent three days two nights in Singapore at Mandarin Orchard. This hotel is situated at the hustle bustle of Orchard Road so it’s very strategic and easy to be found. You can also find many legit shopping centres like Mandarin Gallery, Orchard Gateway, Ngee An City, Wisma Atria, Orchard Central and many more.
We stayed at the Superior Deluxe Room. They told us that they have renovated the room to be a little bit bigger. The atmosphere is relaxing and comfortable. Just what we need after a long long walk in Singapore: high quality rest! Besides that, the staff are very kind and helpful too. Spacious room, friendly services and great hospitality, couldn’t ask for more!
On our first day, we had dinner at Mandarin Orchard’s well known restaurant, Chatterbox. We savoured their legendary Mandarin Chicken Rice, the most popular and demanded food in the restaurant. The first debut of this Mandarin Chicken Rice was on 1st August 1971, same date as the opening of the hotel.
175 fresh chickens are delivered to the restaurant every morning BUT 40% of the chickens are rejected due to chef’s very stringent standards. Chickens that are bruised or lacking in size are not accepted. They breed the free-range chickens for 60-65 days to ensure their meat is tender but firm as compared to the average 30 days for commercial chickens. Quality is priority!
They put the chicken on 5°C to ensure the freshness and boil the chicken in a seasoning stock of ginger, garlic, salt and pandan leaves to make it tender and moist. Then, the chicken is submerged in an ice bath for 15 minutes and part of the chicken stock is used to prepare the ginger rice to be served with the chicken. The other half is used as a garnish with cabbages, carrots, soft tofu and aromatic herbs. The Thai medium-grain Jasmine rice is boiled in a special broth for 30 minutes.
To enjoy this dish, it will cost you 27 S$. Some of you might think it’s a little bit pricey but we just can’t lie, this one is super tasty and different from others. The chicken is seasoned really well and served with fragrant rice & savoury broth. For the quality and effort that they have put to make this, this is definitely worth it. Not to mention, the portion is really big and enough to satisfy your hunger.
Did you know that that have served over 10 million portions of Mandarin Chicken Rice since its first introduction? Now, you know the fact!
Another thing that we enjoy at Mandarin Orchard is the Handy phone for every visitor. You can find this phone at your desk. We’re allowed to use the phone while strolling around Singapore until we checked out. You can call/text your friend, use the GPS to find routes or update your social medias with this phone. It’s really convenient so you don’t have to buy new sim card or add extra charge for international roaming. Before check out, you can click the ‘erase data’ app to erase all your data in the phone to prevent data misuse.
Handy also provides you city guides & information, plus you can also purchase tickets for events/attractions in Singapore with this phone. So helpful right? But remember, it’s not yours forever so be responsible. Make sure you read the terms & conditions first before you use it.
Our weekend getaway at Mandarin Orchard was truly amazing. Definitely highly recommended.
