A Jakartan’s Guide to Blok M
JKTGO’s resident Cool Dude recently went on a tour of Blok M to scout out some super cool places for you to spend your weekend. As some of you may know, Blok M is better known as Jakarta’s red light district *sigh* but it’s also home to our very own Little Tokyo. Come with us and spend a day re-discovering the lesser known areas of Jakarta.
Second-hand bric-a-brac, Blok M Square
If you’re planning on starting your day early, it’s best to have a look at the second-hand goods available at Blok M Square’s Basement 2. While it’s known as a hub for Indonesian second-hand books, you’ll find a few select stores specialising in other wares. As long as you have a keen eye, you’ll find everything from rare, old German books, National Geographics from the 1970s, vinyls, suitcases and just about every bric-a-brac you can think of.
While Blok M Square is technically an air-conditioned building, it can get a little warm, so don’t say we didn’t warn you. There’s parking just outside, and if you plan on buying some larger items, we recommend you bring a vehicle.

Shooting Range, Blok M Plaza
We’ve done a post on this before, but we still think that saying “I’m gonna shoot some targets” when your friends ask what you’re doing this weekend is pretty cool. You can read up about more of Jakarta’s gun ranges in our post: A Shooting Range in Jakarta?
The Blok M Shooting Range is located in Blok M Plaza, a little ways away from Blok M Square. It’s a walkable distance, sure, but us Jakartans are known to be pretty lazy so maybe you can drive there?

Kawana Sushi, Little Tokyo
One of the more discreet shopfronts, Kawana Sushi is famous for – you guessed it – sushi. The place is known for their great quality ingredients and exciting omakase (a Japanese phrase meaning “I’ll leave it up to you”). Of course, when it comes to omakase, price isn’t usually an issue – so don’t ask for the Chef’s omakase if you’re on a tight budget. What’s most interesting though is that Kawana Sushi sells the ever-elusive fugu fish (puffer fish) that daring foodies vie to try.
When: Monday – Sunday; 18:00 – 23:00
Where: Jl. Melawai 9 No. 9
Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta

Daitokyo Sakaba, Little Tokyo
By far one of the most famous izakaya on the Little Tokyo block, Daitokyo Sakaba sells good food at a fair price. With bar seating and private areas on both the first and second floor, there’s a spot for every occasion. Whether you’re with colleagues after work, on a date or with your family on the weekend, there’s definitely somewhere for you. Do note that it does tend to get crowded especially on Friday and Saturday nights, but really they’re full every night of the week.
We also did a feature on our favourite Japanese restaurants in Jakarta, so if you’re looking for some more food inspiration, go check out JKTGO’s Favourite Japanese Restaurants

Papaya Fresh Gallery, Konbini
Some of you may know Papaya already, they’re the friendly little Japanese grocery store that’s started to pop up around Jakarta. The most well known one is the one in branch in Citywalk Sudirman, but our favourite remains as the Jl. Melawai branch. We all have our dreams of procuring lunch at a Japanese konbini (convenience store) and buying all the cool snacks that are on display… but when you just don’t have time to fly to Japan, or don’t have the money, Papaya Fresh Gallery gives you that same experience!
The best part of it is that at night, they discount some of their bento items, and the prices are a steal! It’s easy to get lost in your konbini-shopping-spree though, so make sure you keep an eye out on how many items are in your basket.
