A Guide to East Jakarta: Eating Out [UPDATED!]

UPDATED: 07/11/2017

Often East Jakarta has a bad rep – a bad rep for being boring that is. There’s really not much to do, and it’s faster to go outside of Jakarta than it is to navigate your way through the endless traffic jams of the city. So we East Jakartas resign ourselves to weekends spent indoors and coming home late at night.

You snobby North, South and West Jakartans think you have it all, and maybe you do, but we’re catching up (and everything is cheaper).

Zubu-Zubu, Cakung

We found a good place to eat shabu-shabu called Zubu-Zubu at Jakarta Garden City (next to AEON Mall JGC). The place is quite spacious and it’s perfect for family lunch/dinner. If you’re here, we recommend you to choose Milk Collagen and Szechuan (Mala) for the soup.

When: Monday – Sunday / 10.00 – 22.00

Where: Food Garden Blok A No.5
Jakarta Garden City
Jl. Tipar Cakung
East Jakarta

Kopi Kecil

Even the place is petite, Kopi Kecil still could offer you cosy atmosphere to unwind. To East Jakartans, you can now grab your daily dose of caffeine without have to go too far! You can also find their other outlet at Komunitas Salihara.

Must try: Es Kopi Susu and some cookies to accompany your cup of coffee.

When: Monday – Sunday / 07.00 – 22.00

Where: Jl Kayu Putih Raya No 1
Pulogadung, East Jakarta

AEON Jakarta Garden City

And YES, only at East Jakarta you can find a huge mall with the ‘biggest ferris wheel in Indonesia’. If you’re looking for something to eat, you can just visit AEON Mall Jakarta Garden City and find a lot of places to eat inside. We have compiled all the things to do at AEON JGC in our previous article so feel free to check this out!

When: Monday – Sunday 10:00 – 22:00

Jl. Raya Cakung Cilincing KM. 0.5
Cakung Timur, East Jakarta

Orvia, Kalimalang

Orvia Cafe Jakarta Timur

If you think East Jakarta can’t be trendy, then think again, because Orvia is here to defy gravity prove you wrong. This cafe is home to many a music night and art exhibitions. On the second floor, you’ll find a small home decor corner and the third floor is an open rooftop cleanly decorated and overlooking East Jakarta (but be warned, the view isn’t exactly romantic).

The food is mostly gluten-free and oftentimes vegan/vegetarian. It’s definitely not what you would expect for East Jakarta, but you should come along and try it out anyway.

When: Monday – Sunday / 10.00 – 22.00

Where: Jalan Raya Kalimalang No.1 Blok A20
Duren Sawit, East Jakarta

Umaku Sushi, Cibubur

Salmon Sake Aburi Nigiri Umaku Sushi Cibubur

You don’t have to scour the globe trying to find good sushi, when you can enjoy Okinawan cuisine right here in Cibubur, East Jakarta. The Umaku Sushi restaurant is comprised mainly of a sushi bar where you can see the chefs work to create your dishes right in front of you. Of course, if you’re coming in as a group there are still tables for you to occupy, but most of the magic is lost that way.

While there are plenty of extravagant fusion dishes on the menu, most of its charm can be found in the simpler dishes such as the one pictured above, the Salmon Sake Aburi. This one is not to be missed.

When: Monday – Sunday / 10.00 – 22.00

Where:  Kota Wisata Ruko Sentra Eropa Blok E 15
Cibubur, East Jakarta

BE-EM Cafe Jakarta Timur

A new addition to the Jakarta Timur F&B community, BE-EM Cafe, Pondok Bambu specialises in coffee, milk and tea – good classic drinks that never fail to put you in a good mood. In addition to that they are also a vapour/vape store. While parking space is not large, it is certainly enough for three to four cars and some motorbikes, so if you can double up with a friend, do that, otherwise it’s not a problem.

It’s location is also fairly close to Cipinang Indah Mall so you can drop by on your way home from doing the grocery shopping. Be sure to show your support and maybe there will be even more popping up in the area!

When: Monday – Sunday / 10.00 – 23.00

Where: Jl. Pondok Bambu, Batas Raya No.2
Duren Sawit, East Jakarta
