Written by Arthur Laurents, with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, West Side Story first premiered in 1957. This legendary musical won numerous Tony Awards and even 10 Academy Awards including Best Picture. West Side Story tells tale of two feuding gangs, Jets and Sharks, marred with racial tension and prejudice. Tony, former member of Jets and Maria, sister of Sharks’ leader, fell in love, but with little to no blessing from their family nor their respective gangs.
Their love story ignites turmoil and tragedy. West Side Story brings message of love, struggle, and the dangers of racial based prejudices which breeds violence. This story is a fitting reflection amidst the widespread of ethnicity, religious, race and intergroup relations conflicts recently. That is why this production involves 49 cast and 40 multi-
racial and multi-national crews to reflect our stance against all forms of prejudices.
