ARKIPEL – Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival was initiated by Forum Lenteng to read a global phenomenon in social, political, economic and culture contexts through cinema.2018 is a special year for Forum Lenteng as the organiser of ARKIPEL Festival; it is the 15th year anniversary of Forum Lenteng since it was established in 2003. The first ARKIPEL Festival was held when Forum Lenteng was ten years old. Departing from Johan Huizinga’s book (1938), Homo Ludens, this year’s ARKIPEL raised the same title: homoludens. Thus, hopefully, ARKIPEL can bring ludic experience in the cinema to the audience. Of course, the ‘playing’ element we mentioned beforehand in this festival is not just a mere playing.

Yuki Aditya, Festival Director, expects ARKIPEL to be a playing field and our experimentation in bringing new knowledge and experience, both to us as the organizer and to the public. “Genuinely, the potential of cinema can be felt when there is a freedom of expression and finding audiences that are not conditioned always to be entertained. ARKIPEL was first held in 2013 for us in Forum Lenteng as the organizer, not only to present films that are mere to entertain but also put them as a medium for experimenting in learning cinema: learn to see, read, write, and organize anything related to cinema through a film festival.”
